studio practice 3A- Who are you? …

WHO ARE YOU?

I am Demi-Marie Burns, an 20 year old student.

WHAT DO YOU WANT?

Short term: To finish my degree and begin working for a gallery.

Long term: To become head curator and then eventually move on to own a gallery.

WHAT DRIVES YOU?

My desire to become successful, I have such a big desire and ambition to work within exhibition space this is what drives me to do well and succeed.

INTERESTED IN YOU?

Why you should be interested in me? Because I am passionate and have a keen interest within the industry, I strive to achieve my best, I have a high knowledge in my area.

In todays session, we looked at these questions, although they seem to be quite hard hitting and harsh, they gave me the questions I needed to answer, they have helped me be more confident in talking about myself and why people should choose me. This task was very helpful for me, this is something I can also improve on in the future.

Studio practice 3A- Final brief

Project brief:

I aim to produce a body of photographic work, which will explore the way people are seen and depicted within elements of society and todays media. I am intrigued on whether the media has ‘control’ on how people are being viewed; this interest has stemmed from a personal experience of being placed within a stereotype, I feel this is due to how the media infers and represents people in conjunction with their self-image and personality, this is something I wish to explore throughout my project.

My aim is to research whether elements of society are unfairly misrepresented across a range of media and the effects this has on self-perception.

I wish to explore if there is a miss-match between media perceptions and reality of many social situations. This can be approached in a few different ways, one way which I would like to explore is the know saying ’Don’t judge a book by its cover’ I wish to explore this, by investigating into it. I would like to approach this in a way, which questions how and why stereotypes are formed.

I also wish to explore who within the making of the image makes the objective and or subjective decisions; these people may include the photographer, graphic designer, curator, marketer etc.

I aim to experiment with the uses of equipment on location and in the photographic studio; this will include looking at the uses of continuous and flash lighting.

As I have ambitions of becoming an exhibition curator, I will be exploring the different photographic mediums in which I can approach this through dialogue with curators of local regional galleries, which links to my professional practice module.

Studio practice 2b – Salma ‘Muslim’

What have I done?

Within this photo shoot I have explored the stereotype of being muslim. This exploration is of how the colour of the subjects skin immediately places her within a religion, whether it be true or not.

I asked the subject to come in clothes with they would normally wear everyday, as they are stereotyped from this appearance.

I have used a blank background once again to keep my images consistent , also to help keep focus with the subject.

What have I got from it?

Again I feel I have got another successful photo shoot from this, a number of images can be put forward to be used. It sits well with what I have stated within my brief, looking at people and their appearances.

The subject was at ease, so again that was quite helpful with getting successful images.

Whats next?

Next is to begin to finalise all my images, to add text on to them of the stories which go with them.

Studio practice 2b – Demi ‘Goth’

What have I done?

My fourth shoot exploring stereotypes. With this photo shoot I have used myself as a subject, this is because I have undergone stereotyping myself. With this stereotype being explored is Goth.

I have photographed myself in my everyday clothing, I have chosen the band t-shirt as this is one thing which people assume is based within the gothic stereotype.

What have I got from it ?

From this shoot I feel I have got some successful images which I can use, as I was photographing myself I felt I had more time, as i didn’t have to rely on anyone else.

However I feel some of my images within this shoot have lacked with compositional skill, other than than I feel technically and aesthetically I have been successful to what I have stated within my brief.

Whats next?

Next is to explore more stereotypes, hopefully getting some more people involved.

But I am now looking through all my shoots, and beginning to do edits, by adding the text of the stories that I am exploring.

studio practice 2b- Jess ‘Emo’

What have i done ?

These images show my third photo shoot, this person has been placed under the stereotype ‘Emo’ because of their appearance.

I used a different location from the first two as it was not available, but again I went for a neutral background to help have focus on the person in the image.

The lighting is the same from the previous shoots, again I want to keep this a consistent factor within my work.

What have i got from it ?

I feel this shoot was successful, the subject was at ease which made it helpful to get the shots I needed. I feel I have got a number of reasonable images which I can use.

As I photographing people each time, I feel I am getting more confident with being able to talk my ideas through with others, explaining myself and my work.

Whats next?

Next is to continue with my other planned shoots, I will be continuing with the same theme throughout.

Making sure I discuss what I am wanting throughly with all my subjects, so they are in full understanding.

studio practice 2b – Nelda ‘Bimbo’

What have i done?

Today I have done my second photo shoot with exploring stereotypes. This stereotype is labelled bimbo, as from the colour of her hair people call her a ‘blonde bimbo’

I used the same location and lighting style from which I did with the previous shoot, as I feel it worked well and would help make my images consistent.

What have i got from it?

From this shoot I only got a few useable image, due to the subject feeling uncomfortable, this translated within the majority of my images.

I feel this still can go towards my final outcome, as I got a few which can be used to go with the story and stereotyping.

Whats next?

Next I will continue to plan and photograph more people who have been placed under stereotypes.

Although with this photo shoot I tried to make the model as comfortable as possible, I feel I may need to try harder to be able to make my subject feel at ease, so this is something I will practice with all my on going photo shoots.

studio practice 2b – Nicole ‘Ghetto’

What have i done?

Today i have done a photo shoot with Nicole, I photographed her as person portraying who she really is.

I then got to understand her story and what stereotype she is placed in, why she thinks this, and who she really is.

I used a location which would have a blank background, I wanted to focus on the portrait of the person, I felt from previous shoots that the relative backgrounds wasn’t really working as well, so I looked at using the blank background.

What have i got from it ?

From this shoot I have noticed that the plain background works well, it helps to focus on the person themselves.

I also feel I have been improving my portraiture skills, as I learn about the person before hand so I can understand what parts of them to photograph.

Whats next?

Next is to look through this and develop the story by adding text along with the image, I also will be continuing to photograph other people, going along with the same theme as what is shown here.

techniques and processes 2b – light and dark

What have i done?

Today i did my final prepared photo shoot, i decided to add both of my themes within this shoot, both ‘good/light’ and ‘bad/dark’.

I kept the light quite similar to eh previous ‘light’ photo shoot as with this one i wanted to focus on expression.

What have i got from it ?

I feel this has worked quite well, i feel i have managed to get both themes within these images. overall i am quite pleased. I feel all image fit well with what i have stated within my brief.

Whats next?

Next is to look at all my shoots and then select ones which i feel will be best for my finals.

techniques and processes 2b – light 2

What have i done?

This is my fourth photo shoot, and the second of my ‘good/light’ theme. I decided to have a grey background this time, as from my last shoot other lights triggered mine off which made the background grey, and i quite liked the effect.

Again i used the capture one software, to use for this work.

What have i got from it?

I feel this shoot was quite successful as i feel it has brought the theme which i wanted to across, it also fits well with what i have stated within my brief.

Whats next?

Next is to do my last and final shoot, I will then look at all my images and decide which i feel can be selected for my finals.

techniques and processes 2b – dark 2

what have i done?

Today i have done my third studio shoot, second of my ‘dark/bad’ side.

Again i decided to have the background dark to go along with the theme, and this time i had one light in front of myself.

I continued to use the capture one software as i have with my other shoots so far.

what have i got from it ?

Again i am feeling slightly more confident in doing the self portraits within the studio, using the capture one software, i have become confident enough that i am sure of where to position myself now.

As i was not rushed and it was planned ahead, I felt i was time effective, I feel the shots i have got from this shoot are successful, I feel i have achieved what is stated within my brief.

whats next?

Next is to continue as i am doing, preparing beforehand so i am not rushed, making sure i am doing which is stated in my brief, and continuingwith photo shoots.
