techniques and processes 2b – light and dark

What have i done?

Today i did my final prepared photo shoot, i decided to add both of my themes within this shoot, both ‘good/light’ and ‘bad/dark’.

I kept the light quite similar to eh previous ‘light’ photo shoot as with this one i wanted to focus on expression.

What have i got from it ?

I feel this has worked quite well, i feel i have managed to get both themes within these images. overall i am quite pleased. I feel all image fit well with what i have stated within my brief.

Whats next?

Next is to look at all my shoots and then select ones which i feel will be best for my finals.

techniques and processes 2b – light 2

What have i done?

This is my fourth photo shoot, and the second of my ‘good/light’ theme. I decided to have a grey background this time, as from my last shoot other lights triggered mine off which made the background grey, and i quite liked the effect.

Again i used the capture one software, to use for this work.

What have i got from it?

I feel this shoot was quite successful as i feel it has brought the theme which i wanted to across, it also fits well with what i have stated within my brief.

Whats next?

Next is to do my last and final shoot, I will then look at all my images and decide which i feel can be selected for my finals.

techniques and processes 2b – light 1

what have i done?

Today i have done my second photo shoot, this time portraying my ‘light/good’ side.

I decided to use a white background to help portray the light, using a soft box for the background and a honeycomb light to light myself.

Using capture one software I could see which expressions was working and what wasn’t.

What have i got from it?

I now have more confidence in doing self portraits in the studio, especially using capture one, I feel very confident using the software for this purpose now.

I have a better understanding on how to take self portraits more effectively.

Whats next?

Next is to look at all my images, and see which look good, see if any could be possible for finals.

Next is also to continue with more photo shoots.

Task for Kevin Hiscoe

What have i done?

Today I did a photo shoot for Kevin Hiscoe, as the shoot which we were meant to be assisting with him got cancelled.

The shoot which was perviously planned was to have a Fukllerton-Battern style, having the 1000 mile stare.

We arranged shoots, which looked rather out of place practising the 100o mile stare.

What have i got from it?

I have understood that to make a fashion style shot, the model or person involved does not have to make contact with the camera.

I also have gained more experience in working with others, as we had to problem solve together to use only the objects available in the room.

Whats next?

Next is to apply all i have learnt and use this in all my continuing photo shoots.

techniques and processes 2b – dark 1

what have i done?

Today i had my first shoot in the studio for my self portraits, i decided to keep the background dark to keep with my theme of ‘bad/dark’.

I used a snoot light just above myself to help create a eerie and mysterious atmosphere.

what have i got from it ?

From doing this shoot i realised i was slightly short on time, I have come to the conclusion with this is because I feel i didn’t give myself enough time to prepare beforehand. So from this i have realised i will need to give myself a bit more preparation time.

At the beginning i found it quite difficult to position myself correctly, but once i was shooting for about 10 minutes or so, i managed to figure it out.

whats next?

Next i will give myself more preparation time before photo shoots to make sure they run effectively and are not rushed.

I am also going to be planning more shoots to be done in the studio, continuing from which is stated in my brief.

studio practice 2b – jess

What have i done?

Continuing from the first initial idea shoot, i went on and photographed the development.

I chose a natural background, which was rather isolated so the concentration could focus on the person present.

What have i got from this?

I believe using the more natural background has worked well, it helps to focus on the person and their appearance.

I understand that I could also shoot a person within their related background, but i could use a shallow depth of field to loose focus off the background art.

Whats next?

Next is to develop on. I will be contacting more people to photograph, so i can continue to photograph people who have undergone issues surrounding their appearance.

I may also go back to the relating background and use a shallow depth of field to just focus on the person.

studio practice 2b – initial idea.

What have i done?

Testing out my initial idea. I begun to do tests of how i could photograph my initial idea, i decided to photograph the person in a background in relation to their personality. This one was in a bedroom set-up, with music posters in the background to show the persons musical interests.

What have i got from it?

I believe this testing was successful, the outcome of the images technically and aesthetically come across well. Although i believe in future photo shoots i will be focusing more on the persons appearance, rather than any background relations.

Whats next?

Next is to continue to take images, developing my initial idea.

studio practice 2a – olivia 2

What have i done?

My third photo shoot, I re-visited the photo shoot with Olivia, moving onwards from the first one with her, i asked her to wear her favourite colour.

Feedback from the previous shoot with Olivia is that the images came across more fashion than portraiture, so i tried to focus on more head shots within this second shoot with her. As  i went on to do more full body ones to show more of the colour, I have come to the conclusion that the photos with Olivia are portraits, but they can come across in a fashion way. But Olivia is a very fashionable person, as you can see by looking at this shoot and the previous one.

what have i got from it?

I believe i have got a very successful photo shoot here, with some very strong images.

I feel the lighting is very good, very nice and natural, and also i believe I have slightly improved with composing my images.

whats next?

I will be planning on doing another two photo shoots following on from this, i will again be looking at using neutral coloured backgrounds with natural lighting.

studio practice 2a – nicole

What have i done?

This is my third photo shoot, within this shoot i used two different locations. The one which is present in the previous two, and also a yellow corridor which is in familiarity withe the models favourite colour.

I explored both backgrounds, experimenting with the coloured background to see what effect it would give,

what have i got from it?

I have continued to develop onwards within my photo shoots, understanding that using a neutral coloured background within my shoots will add to the consistency of my project.

Although using a coloured background has been a success, I believe it would be better to keep a constant colour location within my images.

whats next?

Next is to focus on my photo shoots, again using a neutral coloured background, helping focus on the colour which is worn by the model.

i will be planning on doing another 3 photo shoots, hopefully having a good range of different colours to work with.

techniques and processes 2a – 2nd shoot

What have i done?

My aim from this photo shoot was to develop on from my previous.

I have used the same locations as before, but i have used different models.

I also have done a little experiment with lighting, I shot all images on 1/5 second exposure, without tripod.

what have i got from it?

Looking back at all my images from this shoot, I don’t feel it was very successful, the lighting is under exposed in some places, making the people un clear within the images, as my project is based on portraiture and the effects on lighting on people, it doesn’t work very well.

whats next?

Next i wil be planning more photo shoots, and developing onwards from this one. I will stick to using a tripod as then i can go on to slower shutter speeds without getting any camera shake, this will also improve and develop onwards on the exposure from this photo shoot.
